WordCamp US 2020 Cancelled
Organizers of WordCamp US 2020 announced that this year’s virtual event will be canceled. “It is with heavy hearts that we have made the decision to cancel this year’s WordCamp US event,” organizers said in a blog post. “In light of the continued pandemic, online event fatigue for attendees, organizers, and volunteers, and the desire for WordCamp experiences to be traditional WordCamp experiences, we have made the difficult decision to stop this year’s planning, and cancel WordCamp US 2020.” In May the team announced the event will go fully virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. WordProof Awarded 1 million Euros from European Commission
Dutch WordPress startup, WordProof, has received a 1 million euros from the European Commission. The grant was created to encourage developers to find ways to use blockchain technology as a way to solve social issues. WordProof is aimed at giving consumers a way to validate information using the Timestamp Ecosystem. Grant For The Web Accepting Proposals Through June 22
The Grant for the Web proposal deadline has been extended through June 22. The $100M fund was set up to help developers working on “privacy-centric, open, and accessible Web Monetization ecosystem.” Grant for the Web is funded and led by Coil, working in collaboration with founding collaborators Mozilla and Creative Commons. (Additional collaborators may be added in the future.) Online is Amazing– WordCamp Europe 2020
WordCamp Europe 2020 Online brought in 8,756 attendees, making it the biggest WordCamp to date. The conference consisted of two full days of live-streamed talks as well as a Contributor day. The team decided to move the entire conference online in order to keep community members and organizers safe in the wake of the pandemic. Though it was an incredibly tough decision, and a lot of hard work, the conference was a huge success bringing in almost triple the attendees from last year. In light of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, one WordPress developer, Phil Johnston, took it upon himself to make speaking out against racial injustice as easy as possible for WordPress site owners. Virtual WordCamp Europe 2020 Kicks Off June 4
WordCamp Europe 2020 starts this weekend with Contributor Day on Thursday followed by talks on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are free and you can still register!
