Automattic just closed a Series D funding round of $3 million from one investor, Salesforce Ventures. According to Automattic founder, Matt Mullenweg, this investment will allow the company to stay the course and honor the current roadmap. For Automattic, the funding will allow us to accelerate our roadmap (perhaps by double) and scale up our existing products—including WordPress.com, WordPress VIP, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and (in a few days when it closes) Tumblr. In its biggest acquisition to date, Automattic Inc. has purchased Tumblr along with its 200 employees. Automattic CEO, Matt Mullenweg told the Wall Street Journal that executives will try to find ways to merge Tumblr’s functionality with WordPress.com’s. WordPress powers over 30 percent of the web, including some of the Internet’s biggest enterprise sites. On Tuesday, WordPress VIP Go experienced an issue that left multiple sites with nothing but a photo of a succulent. At 17:27 UTC, WordPress VIP announced ongoing issues with the platform, citing 503 errors and missing theme files. This caused many sites to experience the default theme. One of the largest multilingual plugins in WordPress, WPML, was breached this weekend when customers received an email claiming the plugin released sensitive information. The email encouraged customers to check their databases and passwords and not rely on the plugin’s customer service to fix the problem.
