I’m near-infinitely curious about open source technology and how that impacts us not at just a microscopic leve but also a macroscopic as well – how it’s changing not just how I see software and product development but how it’s changing the landscape of publishing as a whole. That’s why I spend time looking into and understanding licensing and the licensing issues (especially around the GPL) and find interesting comparisons between WordPress and other CMSs and their challenges (like Joomla’s Civil War). With Joomla’s and WordPress’ issues with licensing it can be hard, at times, to understand what exactly the […]
There was a great post on Medium the other day that I’ve been mulling over since it was first published and since Medium doesn’t have a commenting system quite yet I thought I’d share my thoughts here instead. The post, titled Editor, Product Manage Thyself, is an fascinating introspection of a developer turned journalist turned editor and one that I have experience with myself, although I have never considered myself a “journalist” in the typical sense. One of Paul Smalera’s arguments is that editors now have to be just as much product managers in today’s digital economy since they must be […]
Totem is amazing – there’s no doubt about that. Watching him do his work and craft was mind-blowing, especially considering that he did very little to prepare and just “shot from the hip” (or canister I suppose). I spent a few moments with him right after he finished the last part and talked through his work as well as asked him to give us some advice on how we can do great work by following our passions and creativity. If you’ve got 10 minutes then you need to check this out after the jump:
We mentioned previously that the possibility of uploading your own WordPress-related tips, tricks, screencasts, and WordCamp / Meetup videos would be a possibility and now it’s finally open. Now, of course, there are some guidelines that you must adhere: WordCamp Videos: The audio is clear and easy to understand, the camera was on a tripod, the video shows the speaker and slides, divide the video by presentation if possible. Screencasts: Keep it concise, keep it clear, keep on track (no chock-full of personal promotion please), keep it current. Vodcasts and other video-based content: If you have put together a video podcast or […]
We’re having a blast this week with WordCamp starting up tomorrow and our Jelly Event today (still going on)! We’ve met a bunch of folks that we had just known online only and now real tweeps are becoming peeps. Or something like that. As a result, we’re trying to sit down and catch up with as many people as possible and even having an interview or two if we can. This first one was very “off the cuff” with Daniel Espinoza, a Support Ninja @ WooThemes, blogs about development and business at http://danielespinoza.me and he and his wife are living a Life with […]
If you’re looking for a comprehensive place to start, especially in terms of learning about WordPress (or a place for your clients to learn more about the application that you’re building for them) then you need to head over and bookmark the new and improved Learn.WordPress. With tons of new content you’ll have most of your questions answered from getting started to the use of tags. There are many other resources out there but you can be sure that trusting WordPress.com with your educational needs is going to be safe and stable. One of the neatest things that I like […]
An interesting site passed my desk the other day – Automatic. No, not the beloved and largest commercial WordPress company Automattic, but rather another company that appears be just very cool in it’s own right. Sure, this has nothing to do with WordPress – but hey this service looks completely legit – and it may save your life. That’s worth a shoutout with a loose affiliation to the other Automattic, right?
Today I’m so stoked to share with you something that we’ve been keeping hush-hush for the past 3 weeks and it’s finally time for the epic reveal. As you well know already the parent company of WP Daily, 8BIT, is comprised of a bunch of super-nerds and video gamers who grew up in the 80’s and at the very center of 8-bit retro gaming. This is why we named our company the way we did. Our goal has always been to close the distance between work and play – in fact, we just want to play all the freaking time. So we […]
We’ve covered already the fact that Posterous was also heading south and we’ve written how you can get those posts out of Posterous too. It’s too bad really, especially since shops like Obox has partnered with them in the past creating a set of themes even for them historically. But they are going the extra mile by not only receiving those themes back that they developed but also releasing them for free – all 5 of them:
As many of you know now Google Reader has hit the dead pool and will no longer be in service July 1st. I am sad and incredibly upset at this news, even though I had been expecting that the day would come, namely because it’s become an intimate part of my overall workflow. So much so that when I heard that it was coming I started shaking in anger – the mere thought of having to transition from an application that I’ve used since 2007 and have religiously used every single day is more than I can bear. I won’t […]
