I love backup solutions for WordPress. I love them because they are vitally important to our survival as a company who runs on WordPress – if you don’t have a solution already then you need to look at some of the staples among us already, like BackupBuddy and VaultPress, which recently opened a new tier offering for smaller blogs. But it seems that every week we’re getting more and more services and “apps” that are entering into the WordPress-centric backup marketplace. Although I don’t mind the entry of new players because competition is naturally good for everyone, I do wish […]
As reported by one of our community members, Mark Root-Wiley, it seems that Dreamhost has been having a bit of trouble in the last few days with some brute force attacks that have slammed their servers and hosting: Our admin team is continuing to roll out the fix and monitoring where needed. They are confident the source of the connectivity issues are due to large-scale brute force attacks to wp-login pages. These attacks are overloading affected servers and the fix being applied will limit the rate these attacks are hitting wp-login pages. In addition to the fix that’s being applied […]
It seems that Human Made may be the place to head these days if you’re a well known WordPress celebrity (can we call them “Presslebrity”?) and are looking to build a stacked team of talent, right? Of course this is mostly tongue-in-cheek, but it is great to hear that Noel Tock has joined the likes of Daniel Bachhber and Paul de Wouters via his announce post late yesterday: I’m proud to announce that I will be joining the Human Made family as a partner, responsible for all products (as opposed to client work/consulting). With this change, comes consolidation. Part of upping our game requires […]
WordPress 3.5 was released 5 months ago on January 24, 2013 and today the WordPress download counter crossed the 20 million downloads mark, which comes to approximately 130 thousand downloads each day.
Although MediaElement.js is being added to core in 3.6 there are some that will always favor developing or integrating their own flavor, despite the increase of native features as well as newer oEmbeds like Rdio and the like. I happened across this free touch-friendly audio player and thought it would be good to highlight, just as a point of reference at the very least for those audiophiles among us.
We’ve covered Microlancer pretty extensively and are big fans of the idea. Recently, we were introduced to a somewhat similar service that exists as an alternative to Microlancer and provides some other great services and it’s always worth sharing alternatives and even competitors as everyone profits from competition. It may or may not be for you but it’s worth taking a look if you’re in the market to provide WordPress services – and sometimes it’s better to join a “smaller” service than a big one, depending on where you are in your WordPress contracting/consulting career.
As announced via official WP News, WordPress 3.6 Beta 3 is now ready for your tests: Beta 3 contains about a hundred changes, including improvements to the image Post Format flow (yay, drag-and-drop image upload!), a more polished revision comparison screen, and a more quote-like quote format for Twenty Thirteen. As we had shared previously, this update includes the neat new audio oEmbeds via Rdio and Spotify.
With all of the security discussions as of recent it’s been top of mind for many WordPress users and developers alike. Most of us are firming up our security options, downloading plugins, and asking better questions about WordPress security. There are also some that are reminding us that WordPress is secure, so don’t get it twisted! It’s time to clear up the debate once and for all. Despite all the doubts (and some haters), WordPress core is without a doubt one of the most secure platforms you can choose to put a site on. Of course, a WordPress install is only as secure […]
GigaOM knew they had a speed problem with their site, so a redesign was in order. Unlike many, they decided to make speed a main focus of their redesign, rather than aesthetics or some other goal. The results are quite amazing, as reported by VIP.
The story continues to gain steam and excitement for the successfully-funded Kickstarter Ghost project, which is now at a point where they are trying to reach their stretch goals with force and gusto. In a recent update they’ve shared a few key things that make this update pretty special, the first being that they’ve “sold” out their top partner space to 8 great companies, adding atechmedia, MarketPress, and SingleHop to their lineup. Another addition is Code School, which is a great resource for continuing education and for those that may want to start a new career – they are partnering in a neat way where […]
