Generating passive income from blogging is something like the holy grail of online entrepreneurship. Imagine a life in which you are able to spend your time doing what you want, taking vacations when you feel like it, sleeping and working on your own schedule. No office to go to, no boss, no meetings to take. All the while, your blog generates a full-time income 24/7, whether you are at your computer or sipping colorful drinks at the beach. What sounds like a fantasy for the average person, is a reality for many. With a large enough audience, it’s absolutely possible […]

Any WordPress user is familiar with the featured image. It is the picture that usually appears at the top of a post and also inside archives and search results. Knowing how to use it correctly is an important skill for any website owner. For that reason, below, we will talk about this feature in detail. You will learn what the WordPress featured image is, why it matters, how to use it correctly, customize it and troubleshoot issues. Let’s go. The WordPress Featured Image Represents Your Content Site Wide Before getting into how to use featured images correctly, let’s first define […]

In an ideal world, your clients would always have the budget to hire the experts they need for any given project. Alas, the real world isn’t like that. The cold truth is that, more often then not, you’ll end up the sole provider of everything required for a project. However, on some small projects wearing two hats (i.e., as both a developer and a content creator) could actually net you additional income, and streamline the process for your clients. What’s more, this is feasible even if you lack much in the way of creative writing skills. In this post, we’ll […]

WordPress powers over 30 percent of the web, including some of the Internet’s biggest enterprise sites. On Tuesday, WordPress VIP Go experienced an issue that left multiple sites with nothing but a photo of a succulent. At 17:27 UTC, WordPress VIP announced ongoing issues with the platform, citing 503 errors and missing theme files. This caused many sites to experience the default theme. Affected sites included TechCrunch, WooCommerce, Rolling Stone, and BBC America. The team was quick to release a response to the issue: WordPress VIP Go outage affecting all 9to5/Electrek/DroneDJ sites currently. https://t.co/PQCWWc50MW We’ve reverted to default WordPress theme […]

Taking over a website from another designer sounds like good deal. No need to build anything from scratch, just get the login information, check in every once in a while and write regular invoices. Easy money, right? However, when you do take over an existing website, the reality is quite different. Websites don’t exist in a vacuum, there are lots of moving parts and many steps to it. To help you avoid forgetting anything and make the process as smooth as possible, we wrote up a checklist of what to keep in mind when taking over administration of a finished […]

There is a lot of hate out there directed at the new WordPress block editor (aka Gutenberg). I’ve been frustrated with aspects of it myself. And change is difficult. Much of the frustration may stem from familiarity with the old editor and having to learn new ways of doing things in the block editor. As a blogger myself, and someone who’s company manages many WordPress websites, I actually find that I really like Gutenberg, overall. In adopting the block editor, we’ve traded some frustrations with the classic editor for some new frustrations with Gutenberg. Personally, I quite like the trade […]

Unless you’re brand new to WordPress, chances are you’ve heard about the platform’s new editor. It’s obviously here to stay, but what’s less clear is whether it’s the right choice for every website. The ‘Block Editor’ is hardly based on a new concept. It uses the same basic design and elements that popular page builder plugins have been relying on for years. This means even though it’s now a default feature, the Block Editor has well-established competition. In this post, we’ll take a brief look at the history of the Block Editor and where it is now. Then we’ll discuss […]

There are a few things that should be part of the WordPress developer’s toolbox. Besides a good code editor and the number for their hosting provider’s tech support on speed dial, an FTP client is definitely among them. However, what are the best FTP clients for WordPress users? If that is a question that’s also keeping you up at night (and why wouldn’t it!?) you have come to the right place. Below, we will talk in detail about what an FTP client is, why you need one, how they work and features to look for in an FTP solution. After […]

As far as programming languages go, PHP gets major updates fairly often. This means that as time goes on, WordPress needs to update the minimum required PHP version to keep up with those updates and provide users with a better experience. While you’re reading this, WordPress is making a jump to PHP version 5.6. It’s not the latest PHP version, but it’s still a major change that’ll impact the way WordPress users do things. There’s no need to worry, though: this update is a good thing. In this article, we’re going to break down the reasoning for the jump in […]
