By now you’ve probably heard of Paul Miller, you know, the guy who went offline for an entire year. The Verge, his employer, paid him to do it and then report. Seemed like a good deal and he took it; besides, he had professed that he was burnt out and he needed a break. In fact, his original plans were to quit altogether. So on April 30, 2012 he unplugged and went on an existential journey to learn more about himself. I read the article and watched the video the first day that it was posted. I kept the article […]
Or so it’s reported…! The President of the United States visited the Capital Factory startup offices, which has played a role in helping WP Engine get to where they are now. Jason Cohen, founder of WP Engine, shared a few thoughts on how they’ve created not just a great company culture but jobs that really matter: Since we founded the company 3 years ago, WP Engine has grown from our first 3 people, to now nearly 50. We’ve not only created dozens of jobs, but I believe we’ve created jobs worth having. And if you can get the right type of […]
Boy, we love free stuff! And we love great giveaways, like the one that we’re partnering with Elegant Themes to do today and for the next week! We’ve got 3 lifetime accounts to hand out to our community members here at WP Daily and we’re stoked. And hey, by this time you know that we do these pretty regularly, so you know the drill!
Can you imagine building an entire business around “beautiful buttons”? Sometimes when I think about that I giggle a little. It’s not in jest at all – I love the idea of how with a great idea, decent execution, and then a consistent focus on iteration and product development. In this case it’s a business of buttons. I’m reminded of a recent interview by Matt Medieros who said: I love the idea of Max Foundry’s button plugin because it solves such a simple problem. Don’t have the design chops or time to code some sweet CSS buttons? Let’s see how Dave Donaldson […]
A freebie for your lunchtime enjoyment: an iPhone 5 .sketch template via Dribbble. With more and more websites going mobile and responsive it’s best to have some of these templates at the ready, especially when prepping for a design for a client or for your own projects! I’ve been bookmarking quite a few in the past few months – it seems that everyone has a free version to giveaway. I love the online culture of free don’t you? So much great stuff that people are so willing to share with others. Oh, why the heck not?
I love backup solutions for WordPress. I love them because they are vitally important to our survival as a company who runs on WordPress – if you don’t have a solution already then you need to look at some of the staples among us already, like BackupBuddy and VaultPress, which recently opened a new tier offering for smaller blogs. But it seems that every week we’re getting more and more services and “apps” that are entering into the WordPress-centric backup marketplace. Although I don’t mind the entry of new players because competition is naturally good for everyone, I do wish […]
As reported by one of our community members, Mark Root-Wiley, it seems that Dreamhost has been having a bit of trouble in the last few days with some brute force attacks that have slammed their servers and hosting: Our admin team is continuing to roll out the fix and monitoring where needed. They are confident the source of the connectivity issues are due to large-scale brute force attacks to wp-login pages. These attacks are overloading affected servers and the fix being applied will limit the rate these attacks are hitting wp-login pages. In addition to the fix that’s being applied […]
Is it just me or am I the only one who’s completely miffed by the strange display of secrecy (anonymity?) behind the mysterious employer that owns-and-yet-does-not-operate WPTavern? Jeffro has been incredibly coy about it all, although he’s mentioned in a recent blog post comment reply that his “boss” will soon share some more of these details: I know we have the interview questions but my boss will be the one publishing a post here on WPTavern.com at some point in the near future that will explain a bunch of things. (The “interview questions” are ones that I gave Jeffro a […]
It seems that Human Made may be the place to head these days if you’re a well known WordPress celebrity (can we call them “Presslebrity”?) and are looking to build a stacked team of talent, right? Of course this is mostly tongue-in-cheek, but it is great to hear that Noel Tock has joined the likes of Daniel Bachhber and Paul de Wouters via his announce post late yesterday: I’m proud to announce that I will be joining the Human Made family as a partner, responsible for all products (as opposed to client work/consulting). With this change, comes consolidation. Part of upping our game requires […]
Although MediaElement.js is being added to core in 3.6 there are some that will always favor developing or integrating their own flavor, despite the increase of native features as well as newer oEmbeds like Rdio and the like. I happened across this free touch-friendly audio player and thought it would be good to highlight, just as a point of reference at the very least for those audiophiles among us.
