I don’t know why I find this odd but I really, really do. If you’ve done any work with the self-hosted version of WordPress then you’re already intimately aware of MySQL, the preferred database of connecting the core application to a relational system to make all of that “magic” work. And in less than 4 weeks it’ll turn 18 years old – I suppose it’s just graduating High School at this point. During it’s storied history though it’s gone through a lot from being bought for $1B by Sun Microsystems and then experiencing an Oracle acquisition for 7x that less than […]
I love code names. At one point I had a code name for everything, even code names for code names. My father implanted this interest at a very young age, most likely as a fun activity after seeing Warren Beaty’s version of Dick Tracy. Man, that was a great movie. Back to Shopp, they’ve recently announced that the development of Mars is wrapping up and that the community should be able to see this update come within the next few weeks. Here’s what you can expect to see in version 1.3:
The developing technology around online publishing is continuing to evolve, even as we speak as innovators and application developers begin to make good on their ideas into the real world. Things like Ghost, which is going to hit our shelves in the very near future, are taking a good hard look at not only the future of publishing but also what the history shows us to be both good and bad about digital publication. As a result, we like to cover all types of publishing systems, methodologies, and apps – not all of them are good and most are downright […]
Honestly, what the heck happened? We crossed the 1,000 blog post published yesterday and I didn’t even notice it until I woke up this morning and checked our global stats. I couldn’t believe that we were able to knock out one of our three explicit goals so quickly! But when I had a moment to reflect it makes sense – there’s so much for us to cover here and so much community involvement that we’ve been able to knock out posts daily, hence the name “WP Daily” I suppose. We’re stoked and as a team we’re excited that the momentum […]
I’ve been spending more time digitally-spelunking around iOS development and WordPress recently and I’m starting to bump up against many other WordPress + iOS lovers out there and that’s pretty neat. One that passed my desk recently is a simple and neat plugin that pushes notifications to your iOS or Android-powered device for all the crucial updates that you might need as you run a growing and successful blog. The list of notifications available for WP-Push currently are as follows: New Users Comments Pingbacks Trackbaks Password Resets Notifying Authors of Comments
Lifetime memberships are up for grabs over at the Elegant Themes blog which shared that they’ve crossed the 5 year mark as a company and business. That’s a long time for those that are just now entering into the wild and wooly WordPress ecosystem. I remember when I first encountered Elegant Themes and was surprised at their “interesting” pricing schematic: A one-price fits all (e.g. every single theme). I remember even using some of their themes years ago for some friends who were interested in getting a nice looking blog up and running – since I had a membership I […]
Just a small update on the 1.7.1 maintenance release that dropped earlier this morning. Here’s the overview of the changelog that you can expect to see in action when you update: Fixed a deprecated jQuery call (#4964). Improved the construction of avatar URLs on multisite setups (#4948). Fixed a number of instances where jQuery event delegation is required for button actions to work (#4943,#4931). Fixed a problem when upgrading from pre-1.5 versions of BP (#4935). Fixed a piece of logic that created invalid template markup for non-logged-in users (#4932). Fixed a bug that prevented plugins from saving their group options […]
Flames! All good I suppose. Twitter refreshed their blog the other day and I was hoping, against all hopes perhaps, that they would have chosen WordPress as their technology of choice. But no – they decided to use Drupal of all things. It’s not that I don’t like Drupal as I’ve used it before, but I’m finding it less and less attractive for the reasons that it was once attractive to begin with. This is especially true in the maturation of WordPress as an application framework of sorts.
It’s been “discussed” whether or not post formats were going to be included (should) in the upcoming release of 3.6 and with the Beta 2 released yesterday it appears that the question has been answered as they are included in the beta, although it did cause a little disruption on the release: The longer-than-usual delay between beta 1 and beta 2 was due to poor user testing results with the Post Formats UI. Beta 2 contains a modified approach for format choosing and switching, which has done well in user testing. We’ve also made the Post Formats UI hide-able via […]
Wow, that was quick. In less than 12 hours the Ghost Kickstarter Project found itself fully funded. As of this very moment they are set to clear over 1,000 backers by the end the business day today and perhaps scale beyond £40,000, well beyond their £25,000 goal. Overwhelmed by the volume of interest & support for @TryGhost. Fully funded in under 12 hours. Thanks so much to everyone who has backed us! — Hannah Wolfe (@ErisDS) April 30, 2013 For those interested, £25,000 is roughly equivalent to $37,500 or so in US paper. With 28 days left to go this could easily become […]
