And we all saw this coming. With all the news surrounding Envato, the GPL, and licensing, it was only a matter of time for the official announcement to drop, with the added bonus of having WooThemes join up as a launch partner: We’re happy to announce today that authors on ThemeForest and CodeCanyon can now choose to license their WordPress items through a 100% GPL option. To help us launch this new feature, we’re excited to have one of the most well known and respected theme outfits joining ThemeForest’s ever growing library — WooThemes! This is a day that many […]
When we put out the call to have more people send us stickers to put on our “Friends Locker,” we weren’t joking! And we found some crumbs a’la design this morning as Jake Caputo sent us more than a few for our somewhat lame (but improving) high school-esque locker. He even dug in deep and called us *gasp* nerds…
Landing pages matter. A lot. Any company that has anything to sell or offer a customer it can mean the difference between a successful business and a failed one. Why? Because landing pages provide opportunities for conversion and if you aren’t converting potential customers into real customers then you fail. Period. I am not the best student of landing page psychology and design/development namely because I generally choose to ship products and then figure out the marketing later – this works for me but I’ll be the first to admit that I have a lot that I can learn. I […]
This past week has been an absolute blur – busyness hit an all-time high today as I had a keynote at a conference early in the morning, my daughter’s soccer game, and 3 back-to-back-to-back birthday parties and then my wife had a girl’s night out while I took care of the kids. Whew. I’m drained. But it’s a “good” type of drained, you know? Hope you’re having a great weekend yourself. With that, here’s your Weekend WordPress Roundup:
Contributing to WordPress and the greater community is a big reason why we continue to do what we do – we have a lot of thanks to give in terms of the lives that we get to lead and the freedom to build businesses off of the software. It’s great and it’s a reason to give back. Tom, our technical editor here, just released the JavaScript Coding Standard in the WordPress Codex and has been working on it for the last few months: [O]ne of the things about the WordPress Coding Standards that’s always seemed incomplete to me is how little […]
DradCast is chugging along just fine with them bumping into their 6th episode very soon. In fact, they’ve managed to get Matt Mullenweg to help host the next one which will be broadcast live at 8:00pm EST next Wednesday, the 27th. You’re not going to want to miss it.
The above graphic really does share so much about what is happening in the current war for the right browser now with Google Chrome being the top player with 37% of the market. To see it’s rise over the last 2 years is impressive, overcoming both Firefox (I am still a big fan) and the long-standing incumbent champion, Internet Explorer. What I am surprised is Safari’s still low adoption rate and growth – it is also a great browser and something I use daily as well.
Envato announced late yesterday that they now have updating TOS for membership into their marketplaces. The changes are “minor” so most people and authors shouldn’t have any issue. Things of note are listed in the announcement but a lot of clarification has been added so that the language isn’t confusing, such as changing “application” to “signing up,” and such things. If you’re a big-time player you’ve most likely reviewed the changes but for the average user you can continue on with your day now.
We’ve talked before how WordPress is becoming more “app” like in both development and implementation as well as how it’s being slowly understood as a platform for application development. Traditionally (and forever perhaps) it will always have that blog flavor, but that doesn’t mean that WordPress can’t grow up as developers find more and more unique ways to execute against core. Joshua Sprague over at ThemeForest has a collection that was shared with me late last night that I thought is a good showcase of how some theme authors are paving a way for these “App Themes” that are definitely […]
One of the biggest challenges for freelancers and contractors, even us WordPressers, is making sure that we’re charging the right amount for the work that we get done. There are tons of strategies and even tools out there for those that are looking to figure out that “sweet spot” for project pricing but to be quite honest, there’s nothing better than just experience. But before you walk through the fire and flames where you may get burned for under-charging for your awesome skills, you may want to have Chris Lema and James Dalman (“Dalema”) take you under their wing for a […]
