Envato has announced a subset report of the GPL licensing survey that they created a little while back to help discover whether or not the authors within their marketplace were interested in the licensing structure changes that may be made available to them in light of current events and discussions (see here, here, and here). Last month there was some online discussion around full GPL licensing and the Envato Marketplaces. It started when one of our TF authors was barred from supporting, speaking at and volunteering at WordCamps because he was selling on ThemeForest. While ThemeForest themes sell with a […]
I’ve toyed with standing desks here and there in the past, namely in my own home office (these are very old) but as we’re working on buying more equipment for our office here I’ve had thoughts of getting a standing desk for not just myself but also anyone else who would visit. What are your thoughts about a community-sized standing desk? Have you seen any good examples? Let me know in the comments below if you do.
Have a growing WordPress blog or site as well as a growing monthly cost to support it? If that’s you and you’d much rather be on the side of the former rather than the latter then this presentation by Roshan might be of use. Because all of us would love for our blogs to scale while keeping the costs low, right? Roshan borrows some wisdom Ewan Leith as well to provide us a solution using: Nginx Varnish or Squid PHP-FMP Sphinx CDN Opcode Cache (APC) Take a look at the presentation including the slides after the jump. Hope that helps! Thanks […]
Have you tried out CloudSwipe yet? They are an eCommerce solution that is attempting to make all of your customer’s purchasing experience and your commerce management woes go away. With. One. Big. Swipe. Or at least that’s the marketed idea which is simple enough – and then you experience what they have built. With their “page slurp” technology imagine the ability to create that beautiful custom WordPress-powered site with all the bells and whistles and then for CloudSwipe to come in behind you and “take” your theme and use it to style secure ecommerce pages for selling products. It literally […]
The team developing the Windows Phone app is doing a killer job, with more updates and releases recently than in the previous years and the app is getting better and better. With this big release of 2.0 you’re seeing such things as gallery support (which we love to use), direct dashboard access for those that are doing much management in the back. The fact that you can build the galleries though with all the trimmings in the app itself is going to be a great win for mobile bloggers and those journalists who are capturing their news on their phones […]
CyberChimps Inc., a WordPress Theme Shop that has developed a number of themes in their lineup has gone ahead and acquired ThemeID and their responsive theme that had managed to amass an incredible 500,000 downloads in it’s very short lifespan. This is both a strategic move by CyberChimps and a sweet exit for Emil Uzelac, the founder of ThemeID, as it allows him to leave with a healthy financial move and also allows CyberChimp to capitalize as well on the obvious popularity of the theme and release a “Pro” version that they can monetize: When I first created ‘Responsive’ I […]
As we continue to showcase creative space we have a local agency here in Atlanta that we’ve known for sometime – eyespeak. They are good personal friends but that isn’t why they are being featured here – it’s because they have a rock wall built right in their office as well as office quarters that require you to take a ladder to them. They are, without question, a highly creative and unique branding agency that has a laundry list of well-known clients. Thanks Benj for throwing your creative space into the hat – oh, and yes, they love WordPress. Here’s what they […]
A little off-topic but I thought I’d throw it in there for the heck of it. How about the winners? Surprised? How about those speeches or Seth MacFarlane’s hosting performance? I was pleasantly surprised by Ben Affleck’s emotional speech as I remember his first win nearly 16 years ago – it’s been an “interesting” past decade and a half for that guy, right? I’d share more of my thoughts on this topic but I think that would give me away as being more into movies and entertainment than I’d like to admit, at least for today.
WordPress is a database-driven application that works well for millions-upon-millions of sites. Developers like it, designers like it, end-users and publishers like it. It works. But it’s not perfect and it’s constantly being refined – even some of the things in the upcoming 3.6 release are going to make it even better. Our job as designers, developers, novice and power-users alike, is to help WordPress continue to innovate, bring in the best practices of UI/UX and development standards, as well as look for inspiration in other systems that may be incredibly different. With a lot of the world moving to a […]
Chip Bennett has done a great job of corralling all the feedback so far but needs more community input on the theme names that are allowed in the WordPress repo. Many of you already know the existing guidelines: Themes are not to use WordPress in their name. For example My WordPress Theme, WordPress AwesomeSauce, and AwesomeSauce for WordPress would not be accepted. After all, this is the WordPress Theme repository. Themes are not to use the term Theme in their name, such as: AwesomeSauce Theme. Same reason as above … it’s aTheme repository. Themes may use the WP acronym in the Theme name, such as WP AwesomeSauce. Themes are not to use version-specific, markup-related terms (e.g. HTML5, CSS3, etc.) in their name. Themes are not to use […]
