We had a post recently that shared how web designers should learn to code but I personally believe that in our economy and time that everyone should learn to write a little more code. Why? Just as Code.org is trying to share via Steve Jobs, it teaches you how to think.
You don’t always get a 1099-MISC from Automattic, now do you? Last year was the first year where we started selling our flagship product on WordPress.com and it was a great first year and we hope to make this year even better. It’s hard to imagine that we were partner #5 with Automattic, especially now that it’s grown much, much bigger. We’ve learned a lot about what it takes to be successful in a commercial theme marketplace like WordPress.com and what works and what doesn’t and at some point I’d love to share some of those learnings.
Wow, now this is a first. It seems that the newest magazine theme that we covered recently is now available on Creative Market as one of their offerings: Our friends at Creative Market announced last week that all themes sold on their marketplace are now 100% GPL. We couldn’t be more thrilled about this and send hearty kudos to the gang at CM for doing the right thing. To show our support, we’ve jumped into the fray by offering for the first time ever a WordPress.com premium theme for self-hosted WordPress blogs. This is an interesting move for WordPress.com and Automattic as they are […]
Not much to report here other than the fact that Automattic has released their vector icon fonts for blogs for use in your very own projects. You can add CSS effects if you’d like as well and they are calling it Genericons. It’s part of the upcoming 2013 theme that has gotten a lot of attention and there are already people that have vocally shared that they’re going to include it in their own themes as well.
The bar is continuing to be raised this year as more and more players are jumping into the managed WordPress hosting space – heck, we even shared this morning about one that launched for NPOs and Churches! But the hosting business is a tricky one and it’s an industry that we at WP Daily are paying close attention to because it’s been scooped that even we are getting into the business (I share some candid thoughts in two recent interviews as well here, around minute 23 and here near the very end). I don’t believe that we’ll be competing as directly […]
Building a startup is hard work and it takes a seriously-large gut to stomach the ups and downs, the twists and turns, and incredible highs and the even lower lows. The 3-man team consisting of Orman Clark , Gilbert Pellegrom and Mark Southard are doing just that with their latest startup Dunked, an online portfolio service that’s gotten a bit of press since they announced in a little while back. Many of you will be familiar with their previous work at places like ThemeZilla and PremiumPixels – Orman was the 3rd Elite Author over at Envato which means he sold over $1,000,000 in products via their marketplace and is […]
Love this video from WordCamp Norway: Some quotables:
Noel Tock, founder of Happy Tables, had a recent talk about Going Beyond WordPress that I thought was worth a view. Noel has been the center of attention for his views on such things as the WordPress.com homepage and also the rethinking the WordPress Admin and has a unique and fresh perspective on things. In an interview on NetMagazine early last year Noel shares his thoughts on a better Restaurant website: The biggest problem is also my pet peeve; a restaurant owner thinking that the ambience and décor of their restaurant should be reflected on the website, usually with no regard for standards, accessibility […]
The market for WordPress managed hosting continues to grow and thrive and it’s clear that it’s not only can be a profitable market but that there’s plenty of room for niche-based approaches. Such one I just got wind of is ChurchPr.es, a solution specifically targeting the church and non-profit sector of WordPress users and organizations although it seems to have been cooking since late October of last year. A project by Dallas Bass, a self-professed coffee addict (aren’t we all?), he announced it late yesterday: https://twitter.com/ThisIsDallas/status/306134618485161984 The pricing so far listed is as follows:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg0fbAObdEI&feature=youtu.be Chris Wilson, one of our more prolific contributors and community members here at WP Daily, sat down with me and asked me an assortment of questions related to blogging, how I got started (uploading .html files via FTP), my morning routines, good and bad habits, and even getting me to tease out some of what’s coming down the pipe for WP Daily and 8BIT. I’ve gotten to know Chris more over the last few months and I love taking the time to hang with our community members – it was a pleasure. Here’s what we covered in a nutshell:
